A Month is a Long Time

That was my main thought today. In all fairness, today was not a typical day. I spent all of it (ALL. OF. IT.) cooped up in the custard shoppe, serving delicious, ice cold treats (that looked progressively more delicious as the day wore on) to ka-razy people in the ice cold, only to go to the back of the store to gnaw on my collard green. So my energies were waning.

Right now I have a raw empty feeling about me. I’m not concerned. I felt very much like this the first official day of veganism. It took about a week to adjust to the point where I started thinking about other things in my mind’s spare time other than just: “I’m eating vegan, I’m eating vegan, I’m eating vegan” or now: “I’m eating raw foods, I’m eating raw foods, I’m eating raw foods”. Or both, as it were. So I’m sure a lot of my inability to be satiated today came mostly from the mental part of me, not the stomach part of me.

Which brings me to my next thought. I think this experiment might be less mentally taxing for me and Elizabeth, just because we have slightly more practice thinking about things we need to filter out of our diet. I think that’s a big challenge in getting used to a diet like this. Leiana mentioned it briefly in her post, and I absolutely agree. It takes a while to naturally start filtering what you eat through the lens of what you can have, versus what you can’t have. Choosing without thinking is a habit, and I think once we start getting into that habit, it will be so much less mentally taxing on us. Trying to choose only raw things without mindlessly eating cooked things is hard, I couldn’t imagine going from being able to eat anything under the sun to such constraints with no baby steps. I could be wrong about it being easier on us, but that is my hypothesis.

I was excited to see that Beck had a similar day one experience. I ate ALL DAY, and still only hit barely half of the calories that I would need to eat to maintain my current weight (which is not necessarily my goal), according to The Daily Plate. If you click on that link, eventually you should be able to follow all or some of our food diaries, for all or some of the days this month. There was also a point today where I peed 5 times in 4.5 hours. I’ll be interested in the morning to see if I lost any water weight.
